Ice Yarns Pastel Cotton Yarn Review

Introduction

This summer I purchased some of iceyarns pastel cotton yarn blend. This blend is a 50% cotton 50% acrylic blend that is a good option to add into your stash for the hot summer months. This is a limited edition yarn that sadly some of the colors are selling out of. This yarn did have its faults but overall I really enjoyed working with it. This review will go over everything I enjoy about the yarn, along with every issue I had with it as well.

I am not sponsored to do this post but I am affiliated with iceyarns. This means if you do choose to buy using my links I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Pros

  • This is a really good yarn for those living in hotter areas, or for the summer months if you live in northern Minnesota as I do. It’s amazingly breathable, and the chain-woven blend makes my crochet stitches look tighter, so it covers everything if you’re making garments from it.
  • It is decently soft, though not amazingly—somewhere in between Red Heart Super Saver and Caron Simply Soft. I’m putting this in the pros list because it is very comfortable as a wearable yarn and doesn’t irritate my skin in any way.
  • It has a good color selection—while supplies last, because, as listed above, this is a limited edition yarn. All color blends are on more of the pastel level because of the white strand used as the chain weaving.
  • The cotton acrylic blend makes the stitches have good retention. When I work with 100% cotton yarn, the stitches have a tendency to stretch and not snap back to their original shape. This makes garments made last longer than normal cotton while still being breathable, and your garments will last a long time.
  • It’s very affordable: it comes in packs of 8, and each ball is about 87 cents. This makes each package cost between $5 and $8, depending on if you buy it during the sales. One shirt uses between 4-5 balls, so each package can make several garments, depending on the size of your clothing.

Cons

  • Some areas of the yarn are a tad bit thicker than others, making uniform stitches hard with the puffy areas, especially when making garments. You occasionally have to alter your tension to make up for it.
  • The chain weaving can be a little loose in some areas, making it easy to snag your yarn while working. However, some stretching can fix the snags, so it’s not terrible.
  • It’s listed as a weight 4, but the chain weaving makes it a bit thicker than your average weight 4 yarn. This makes it hard to follow patterns that use a weight 4 or a weight 5 yarn if they are meant to end up a specific size.
  • Occasional knots. As I have been working with it I’ve found 1-2 balls per package that have the occasional knots in them. It’s not all balls, so it’s not super bad, but knots can be annoying. Out of all the yarns I’ve ordered off of this website, it is the only blend that I have found knots in.

Conclusion

Overall I really do recommend this yarn, I feel the good outweighs the bad especially in cost aspect. It works up beautifully and comes with plenty of yarn in a package to be able to experiment a bit. I hope you all enjoyed this review and it helps you in picking out the perfect yarn for your next crochet project!
