Hopscotch Shawl Free Crochet Pattern

Hello Everyone!

It’s Friday once again and September is almost over. With the Capetember event that Jillian Eve is doing I’ve been focusing on shawls this month and my second pattern of the month features simple repeats with beginner friendly stitches. The increases on this shawl are also very beginner friendly and gauge or hook size doesn’t matter here so it’s a great project for beginners or those who want a nice relaxing project to bring with to appointments or wrk on while watching your favorite series.

This pattern will be available as a PDF on my Patreon by the end of the month.

Let’s get hooking!

Supplies

For the one in the photo i used a 3.25mm crochet hook and a weight 2 yarn. I used about 120 grams of the weight 2 yarn.

You can use whatever size hook and yarn you would like just work your repeats until it is the size you would like it to be.

Scissors

Darning needle for weaving in ends.

Abbreviations

Ch- Chain

DC- Double crochet

Ch sp- Chain space

HDC- Half double crochet

Slst- Slip stitch

Notes

the ch 3 at the start of each row will count as a stitch.

I suggest going up a hook size or 2 above what your yarn suggests to get a good lacey feel and drape especially if you’re using the thin yarn I did.

Ch 5, join to the first ch with a slst

Row 1- Ch 3, work 4 DC, ch 2, work 5 DC

Row 2-10- Ch 3, turn, DC in each stitch until you reach the ch sp. Work 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC in the ch sp. Work 1 DC in each remaining stitch, work 2 DC in the ch 3 at the end of the row.

Row 11- Ch 3, turn, DC in the first stitch *Ch 1, skip the next stitch, work 1 DC in the next 2 stitches.* Repeat to ch sp. You should reach your ch sp with a ch 1 and skipping 1 DC. In the ch sp work 2 DC, ch 2. 2 DC. Repeat * to end of the row. At the end of the row you will be working your 2 DC in the ch 3 space at the end of the row.

Row 12- Ch 3, turn, DC in each stitch until you reach the ch sp. Work 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC in the ch sp. Work 1 DC in each remaining stitch, work 2 DC in the ch 3 at the end of the row.

Rows 13-20- Repeat rows 11-12.

Rows 21-29- Repeat rows 2-10.

Rows 30-48- Repeat rows 11-29.

You will continue repeating rows 11-29 until your shawl reaches the desired length for me that was 48 rows.

At the end of your final row, ch 1, and do not turn. Instead you will be working across the top raw edge. You will work 2 HDC in the side of each row.

Once you reach all the way across your top raw edge you will ch 1, and join to the first stitch on the other side with a slst.

Tie off, weave in ends.

Before we go…

As always I hope you all enjoyed today’s pattern. With the weather cooling down at least up here in Minnesota it’s time to start getting some cold weather clothes made. These shawls can be worn like a shawl or wrapped up around your neck and used a scarf. This is also a great project to have as a relaxing project to pick up when you want something mindless especially if you’re working on busting out some projects for the holidays.

This pattern will be available as a PDF on my Patreon by the end of the month for those of you who would like to have a downloadable and printable pattern to work off of.

If you liked today’s pattern you can follow me on Facebook to see new patterns when they come out, get occasional life and blog news, and over the course of the next few weeks I’ll be posting some information about some lovely alpaca and mohair fleeces I’m processing to spin up. I plan on doing some patterns over the next couple months focused on using handspun yarn so if you enjoy spinning or would just like to see some of the process definitely give me a follow!

If you make a project using some of my patterns you can join my Facebook group and show it off. I would absolutely love to see what you all make.
