Beginners Bulky Crochet Sweater

Hello Everyone!

Despite this ridiculous heat wave we are technically in fall and since I started this sweater before the temperatures went up I figured I’d finish it up nd publish it despite the unusual weather. at worst you can make it now and as soon as the temperatures drop back down to fall weather you have a nice cozy warm sweater.

This sweater is made using beginner friendly stitches, a bulky yarn, and large hook making it not only work up quickly but be extra comfy and squishy. It’s made much larger than your actual size be a bulky fluffy sweater that you can just wrap up in.

The simple stitches and large hook makes for a perfect project for beginner crocheters or the advanced crocheter looking for something quick, fun, and functional.

Front

Row 1- Work (46-Extra Small)(48-Small)(50-Medium)(51-Large)(54-Extra Large)(56-2X)(59-3X)(61-4X)(62-5X) Foundation HDC.

Rows 2-40- Ch 1, turn, work 1 HDC in each stitch across.

Row 41- Ch 1, work 1 HDC in first (11-Extra Small)(12-Small)(13-Medium)(13-Large)(15-Extra Large)(16-2X)(17-3X)(18-4X)(19-5X) stitches.

Row 42-50-Ch 1, turn, work 1 HDC in each of the stitches across you just worked.

Tie off.

On the opposite side count in the number of stitches you were to work in row 41. Tie on to that stitch and working towards the closest edge of your sweater work 1 HDC in each stitch across including the stitch you tied on to. Repeat rows 42-50.

For custom sizing take your measurement at the widest point of your torso and add as many inches to that as you would like based off how baggy you want the sweater. I added 25 inches. Multiply the number you got by 1.6. This is how many stitches fir into an inch with the gauge I used. Follow the rest of the pattern accordingly. You will use this measurement and size for the front and back panel.

Back

Row 1- Work (46-Extra Small)(48-Small)(50-Medium)(51-Large)(54-Extra Large)(56-2X)(59-3X)(61-4X)(62-5X) Foundation HDC.

Rows 2-45- Ch 1, turn, work 1 HDC in each stitch across.

Row 46- Ch 1, work 1 HDC in first (11-Extra Small)(12-Small)(13-Medium)(13-Large)(15-Extra Large)(16-2X)(17-3X)(18-4X)(19-5X) stitches.

Rows 47-50- Row 42-50-Ch 1, turn, work 1 HDC in each of the stitches across you just worked.

Tie off

On the opposite side count in the number of stitches you were to work in row 46. Tie on to that stitch and working towards the closest edge of your sweater work 1 HDC in each stitch across including the stitch you tied on to. Repeat rows 47-50.

Tie off.

Sewing together

Place your front and back panel together and sew the top across the stitches you worked in rows 41 and 46. Weave in the ends from sewing in to secure.

From the bottom up sew your sides together until you have (16- Extra Small)(17-Small)(18-Medium)(18-Large)(19-Extra Large)(20-2X)(22-3X)(22-4X)(23-5X) rows left. Weave in your tails to secure.

If you are custom sizing sew it up and try it on until you have as much space in the armpit area as you would like to have. Follow the rest of the pattern the same.

As always I hope you all enjoyed today’s pattern, this was super fun for me to make as I don’t get to do big projects with bulky yarn very often. Plus this is the first pull over sweater I have ever made for myself and I am a huge fan of baggy cozy sweaters in the fall months.

  1. This is a beautiful sweater and I am looking forward to making it in hunter green. This will be my first project that is not a hat or scarf. I went to order the yarn and I noticed that it is acrylic; I am wondering how it holds up to washing and if it pills. Thank you, in advance, for answering.

    1. I have not used this bulky specifically in a lot of washes yet but I have used similar acrylics from this company in different weights and as long as you wash it on gentle with cold water and either lay flat to dry or tumble dry I have noticed little to no pilling.
