Introduction

Hello everyone! I’m sorry I don’t have a pattern available this week, there has been a lot going on. Today, instead, we will be going over some crochet storage tips and tricks to help you organize your supplies, and have more time to just work on your projects! We will be going over ways to store scrap yarns so they don’t become a tangled mess. Ways to organize and catalog your yarns making color selection easier and faster. There will also be some tips for keeping crochet supplies close at hand so you’re never slowed down by searching them out!

Let’s move onto the tips!

Scrap Yarns Connected to Tag

This is one of my favorite things to do for yarn storage, it makes it so you know what kind of scraps you have, along with keeping them from becoming tangled. You will need a few extra stitch markers for this, I order the big sets of 200 off of wish or amazon so that I have plenty extra.

Once you finish using your yarn and it is effectively labeled as a scrap yarn make a slip knot in your yarn, put a stitch marker in the slip knot. Connect the stitch marker through the center of the ball of yarn, poke it through the edge of the correct label, and close it. This keeps the yarn from unraveling, along with letting you know what kind of yarn it is when you go back to your scraps!

Crochet Storage Backpack

Here’s the backpack I use for all of my crochet storage. Mine, as you can see, has a cat on it.

I always have my yarn backpack nearby, its where I hold all of my crochet items. I store my WIP in one pocket, a few extra balls of yarn, along with all of my hooks, and crochet others like darning needles and stitch markers. This ensures all of your hooks and everything is in one place and much less likely to get lost. This means more time crocheting and less time looking for your missing supplies. Another thing this ensures is being able to crochet on the go. You can always grab your bag, and toss it in your car before going somewhere even if you’re in a hurry.

Having your yarn backpack sorted so that you can easily access your supplies is the most effective way to use this method. I like to put my hooks, darning needles, and other things of the like in the front pocket. In the first pouch, I like to keep my Tunisian hooks, along with my current WIP. The back pouch usually holds a notebook for writing down patterns I’m working on, along with a few extra balls of yarn.

Bags for Like Yarns

Yellow yarn labeled Ice Yarns in a plastic bag with a sticky top.
The bag my Natural Garden Ice Yarns came in. I love these bags because they have a sticky top that seals it shut.

As many of you know if you’ve been here before I use a lot of ice yarns. One thing I really enjoy about them is since you have to buy in packages they send all of the same kind of yarn in a bag together. This makes storage so much easier and gives another layer of security against bugs if you have natural fiber yarns.

When Ordering from other companies now one thing I like to do is store the same yarns in either freezer bags, or leftover ice yarn bags. This makes storage, and finding yarn for your next project go much faster, once again leaving more time for creating! It also makes it so you can store your yarns without worrying about them tangling if you’re storing them in a tote or box. You also won’t mess up any of your skeins when digging for yarn for your next project.

Ravelry’s Stash2go

Most of you have probably heard of the pattern sharing site Ravelry. Though what some of you may not know is they have a stash option for organizing your yarns. This helps with yarn organizing tremendously.

What it does is it allows you to upload a picture of your yarn, along with what kind of yarn it is. For most brands, Ravelry already has all of their information on the website which means you just need to type in the name and Ravelry will fill in the rest.

This makes it so when you’re trying to decide on a yarn for your next project you don’t need to dig them all out if you’re storing them in a tote or in boxes. This also allows you to easily check the yardage of each skein of yarn when deciding on a pattern to create since Ravelry will fill those blanks in for you. This really is a great way of keeping track of your yarn especially once your yarn stash starts growing.

This is an app you will have to download onto your phone, you can find it in the app store!

Stitch Markers On Zippers

Bird themed handmade stitch markers using lobster clasp connected to a zipper on a crochet storage backpack. There is a colorful bead on each stitch marker and a different bird charm on each one as well.
I like to keep my handmade stitch markers on my backpack zipper since I use these in my projects the most. I can fit about 5 stitch markers per zipper making them easily accessible and plentiful.

This is such a simple one that makes crochet storage options, along with productivity so much nicer. All it is is storing a few of your stitch markers on the zipper if your crochet backpack, hook case, binder, or any other crochet storage case with a zipper.

This makes it so much easier when you’re crocheting and need a stitch marker. Instead of digging you can just grab one off your zipper and I lose them so much less frequently because putting them away is so simple.

A small little side tip with this one since it was such a small simple tip. If you put a stitch marker through the loop on your hook when you put you WIP away it will keep your WIP from unraveling any stitches if it gets tugged on. This is especially helpful for those with children or pets, so random curiosity can’t make you lose hours of work!

Crochet Storage Tips Conclusion
