Checkerboard Band Top Free Crochet Pattern

Hello Everyone!

It’s Friday once again and I am finally getting over covid so I was able to photograph this top I made for my birthday. This is a VERY easy top to make all you need to know is the half double crochet, double crochet, single crochet, and how to do a simple color change. Due to this this pattern will be structures like more of a recipe or tutorial rather than a pattern and will be worked mostly off a size chart I made.

This pattern will be available in my Patreon as a PDF by the end of the month.

This post will contain affiliate links. This just means if you make a purchase through some of my links I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only link to products I personally use and would purchase again.

Let’s get hooking!

Supplies

3.25mm crochet hook

I made the 1x size and used 2 50 gram balls of each color. I used alara from ice yarns which is a thick weight 2 or thin weight 3.

Scissors

Darning needle

Abbreviations

Ch- Chain

DC- Double crochet

HDC- Half double crochet

Sc- Single crochet

Slst- Slip stitch

Notes

If you use the same size yarn as me each square should be just over 1 inch long and about 1 inch wide.

This pattern can be adapted to any size of yarn if you just use the bust measurement as your guide.

This top will be lacing up in the back so you can make it shorter or longer depending how much of your back you want to show. It would also be easy to just continue working the repeat until its a few inches shorter than the bust measurement and just join the first and last row together if you would prefer to not have a lace up back.

With color 1 (Black)

Row 1- (This row will be the same no matter what size you are making. You can add more or less stitches in a multiple of 5 to make it shorter or longer) Work 60 foundation sc.

Row 2- Ch 3, turn, skip the first stitch DC into the second stitch. *Ch 1, skip the next stitch, DC into the next stitch* Repeat * across.

Row 3- Ch 1, turn, sc into each stitch across, working 1 sc in each ch space not the ch stitch.

Row 4- Ch 1, turn, HDC in the first 4 stitches. Work most of a HDC in the next stitch but don’t yarn over and pull through all loops. Instead grab your second color, yarn over with that color, and draw through all loops on your hook.

A.)You are now working with color 2 (White) You will be carrying color 1 under your stitches. Work 5 stitches in white, finishing your final stitch with black.

B.)You are now working with color 1(black) you will be carrying color 2 under your stitches. Work 5 stitches in black, finish your last stitch with white.

You will repeat parts a and b across your row.

Row 5-7 You will be starting this row with color 1 (black) and you will be carrying color 2 (white) up the side of your work to continue carrying it under your working yarn. After this you will be repeating parts a and b of row 4 across.

After you work 4 rows you will be switching colors on the final stitch of the fourth row and you will be repeating parts a and b across but now your row will start with white instead of black.

You will be repeating this until you have as many squares as you need for your size. If you are making this for yourself then you can sort of try it on as you go by holding it up to your chest if you are making it for someone else you can use the size chart above to determine how many squares to make.

Once you get it to the desired length you will finish it in 3 rows of black.

Row 1 of finish- Ch 1, turn, cut off your strand of color 2 and weave it in. Sc in color 1 (black) in each stitch across.

Row 2 of finish- Ch 3, turn, DC in the second ch from hook. *Ch 1, skip the next stitch, DC into the next stitch* Repeat * across.

Row 3 of finish- Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across, work 1 sc in each ch space not into the ch stitch.

Border

Do not tie off, instead at the end of your final row ch 1, sc into the side of your last row.

Work 2 sc into the side of your DC row, and 1 sc into the side of your other sc row.

You will now work 1 sc into the side of each HDC row.

When you reach the end of the side of your project ch 1, sc into the top of the sc stitch you just worked into the side of. Work 1 sc into the top of each of your foundation sc stitches.

When you reach the end of your foundation sc row, ch 1, and repeat the steps listed above.

Once you reach the end of this side ch 1, sc in each sc stitch of your final row, ch 1 at the end and slst into the first stitch of your border.

Tie off, weave in ends

Make a very long chain to lace the back shut.

Straps

Try this top on and mark where you want the straps. I did mine 13 squares in from the last row on either side.

I then tied on and worked 50 rows of HDC and attached it in the back to the final (or first) square on either side.

Before we go…

As always I hope you all enjoyed todays pattern (tutorial? Recipe?). Whatever you would like to call it. This was a lot of fun for me to workup and I have been loving checkers lately. Next week I normally don’t do this but I am so excited I will be uploading my first dress pattern! The dress will also be written as more of a tutorial than a pattern that way it can be made to fit your individual body.

Remember this pattern will be available as a PDF on my Patreon by the end of the month.
