Introduction

Hello everyone, and once again it is Friday! We all know that Friday means a new free crochet pattern. This week we’re going to be working on a super warm crochet dog sweater. Living in Northern Minnesota we’ve already seen some snow, and the freezing temps are coming soon. I figured making a super thick sweater to keep my little girl warm was the perfect way to start out the season.

This sweater has a large amount of puff stitch stitches in it so it is a yarn eater but very thick. For those of you not sure how to work a puff stitch I will include a written description, as well as a youtube link. This sweater is meant to fit animals that will fit into small sizes in the store. I will include some information on sizing this up or down at the end of the pattern.

Let’s get started!

Supplies

2 skeins of Red Heart Super Saver yarn in colors of your choice. The body color you will use the majority of the skein.

You could also use ice yarns saver line which you can find here http://www.iceyarns.com/git/302/saver

5.5mm crochet hook.

Darning needle.

Scissors

Puff Stitch- Draw up 3 loops as if working a DC stitch. Yarn over, insert into the same stitch, pull up another loop. (You should have 5 now.) Yarn over, insert into the same stitch and pull up one more loop. You should end with 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over, and pull through all the loops on your hook.

Border

Tie into the side of the final sc row (You will be repeating this on both sides).

Row 1- Ch 1, sc in the same stitch you tied into. Work 2 sc in the side of the puff stitch row. *Ch 1, skip the side of the sc row, work 2 DC in the side of the next DC row.* Repeat * to the collar. Once you reach the collar work 1 sc in each stitch of the collar until you reach the top.

Row 2- Ch 1, work 1 slst in each sc and ch space down the side.

Tie off

Finishing the body

We’re going to be adding a bit more length to the body. I did it this way to keep the bottom edges from curling as doing a tight border all the way down can do.

Tie onto the bottom of the body in the side of the slst row.

Row 32- Ch 2, do not work in the slst row, work 1 DC in the side of the sc row. Work 1 puff stitch in each stitch across until you reach the bottom of the sc row. Work 1 DC in the side of the sc row.

Row 33- Ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch across.

Row 34- Ch 2, work 1 DC in the first stitch, Work 1 puff stitch in each stitch across until you have 1 left. Work 1 DC in the final stitch.

Row 35- Ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch across.

Tie off

Legs

With color 1 (purple) Tie onto the outside corner of the leg hole.

Row 1- Ch 1, work 1 sc in the same stitch you tied in on. Work 1 sc in each stitch around. Work in the remaining loops of the ch stitches, and only work 1 sc in the side of the dc row. Join to beginning with slst.

Row 2- Ch 1, work 1 sc in each stitch around, join to beg with slst.

Rows 3-4- Repeat row 2.

Tie off.

Finishing up

Fold it in half and match up your slst row. Start at the collar and whip stitch down the center until you reach your first dec row. Weave in the end and make sure your seam is secure.

Weave in the res of your ends and try onto your fur baby!

Sizing

For sizing up or down it’s mostly all in the collar. Make your base ch to be the width you want your collar. Work the collar the same way I did just add more or less rows to fit around your dog’s neck. Repeat the increase rows until it’s the correct length for your fur baby. For the legs make sure you add extra ch stitches so that it will fit comfortably around your pup’s leg.

Before we go

I hope you all enjoyed today’s pattern and will make this super warm crochet dog sweater to keep your fur baby toasty all winter long. You can use any yarn or colors you want for this but I honestly prefer Super Saver for this. Super Saver is more durable than most other yarns I have used to make these and can hold up to more wear and tear. It also has a bit more of a color selection than most yarns so extra options!

This sweater comes out extremely thick and is meant to keep your puppy warm in the cold winter months. Be careful putting this sweater on your animal if it’s more moderate out or if they have very thick fur, they could overheat. The neckline does come up high, as it is meant to be a turtle neck of sorts to add more heat. If you would like it to be shorter then ch less in the beginning.

Again I hope you all enjoyed today’s pattern, and as always happy hooking.
